I was a Journey member. **. So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. And then you went on hiatus. So I was about ready to crash and didnt know it. The following are excerpts from the interview with Singer by Ultimate Classic Rock: Theyd tried to work with Eric on two separate occasions, but he wasnt well enough. [laughs] Of course! Aynsley Thomas Dunbar was born in Liverpool, England.He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. Aynsley Dunbar was born on the 10th of January, 1946. The guitar solos are note for note just like the album. Umno. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. Because then I started to become a medical guy. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. But I didnt. But alot of times it's the head. Sopranos is a definite yes. What are you talking about? And they would show me on the X-rays, and the MRIs. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. He went out on a solo tour, a solo Steve Perry tour, where none of us were invited. I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. So why bother having it? And every now and then hed look at me and go, What the fuck, yknow? Just lettin the wind kinda blow through me, and just trying to figure a little bit out, how much of me is in there, still, as opposed to what I became? Well, like I saidwe were good together. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. You were able to function, so you never really addressed any of that stuff. You were never cool. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. In the studio, the only appreciation you get is from the guy you're doing the session for, or the producer. I live just above San Diego, in Del Mar. AD: I tune them. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. And that I was still able just to play and have at least half of myself there. At this point, it seems that it will be a rock and roll album. Fuck Steveyknow. And people didnt understand what that meant. We dont get along, but I love his playing. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. Maybe I should just speak for myself. Im not. I love doin it. I just love it. In the interest of fairness, here are the relevant parts of that conversation.] His wife told me he was in a golf tournament, I think in Florida. You mentioned arguingwas there a lot of that? And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. Its a very fine line. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. I've been with them for about four years now. Tony Soprano thinks Journeys cool. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. You forget about it if you don't play it, and most rock bands don't tend to play it. Theres nothing wrong with that. Dunbar vented his frustration with his old band's increasingly commercial direction in a February 1979 interview with BAM, conducted after he joined Jefferson Starship. There was a lot of stuff that we didnt agree on. To cut out the over-ring on the bass drums, I have them lined with half- inch thick foam rubber . I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. "I led his band in the end, that's what happened. Right on! So that was like a nod to Journey from my solo side. I had not opened that up in over ten years. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. AD: I never had any problem. Way after. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . And theyve really liked it. Most of them get bored by it. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. I dont want to be in the band anymore. It starts way in the back, over a railing, and it rolls up to the front. By that time I was actually playing rudiments better than my teacher, so all he could do was help me read music and understand it. What doesn't is a scrappy rhythm backing. AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. Grand Wazoo was charts. Its been a love-hate thing. I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. In a new interview with ABC Audio, Perry reflected. He went to bat for me in a huge way. Okay. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. Sometimes in the paper they'll write, "He played a boring, 20-minute drum solo," and I know perfectly well the guy just doesn't like drum solos, because I never play anything that long. AD: Oh yes. Which was, I gotta get signed before its too late. [laughs]. Aynsley Thomas Dunbar was born in Liverpool, England. **. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. And it was all based around Steve giving us a call and saying Okay, Im fine now, Im ready to go. And it just didnt happen. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. A lot of them are criticizing you because they are frustrated musicians. You didnt make another record for ten years after that. Well, disagreements are part of life! I didnt need any of the other affirmations. RM: I presume you could have your choice of drum companies. I look at it like this: as long as the solo went down, well-that's fine. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. AD: I have a snare drum with a vacuum pad over it-the old Gladstone pad. And theyre all good. And we wrote the record. While I was with him we did the Pinupsalbum, and Diamond Dogs. And I was not gonna be part of that. Eric wasnt up to it. "He wouldn't. RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. I dont know. He was the drummer for eleven Frank Zappa albums. Aynsley Thomas Dunbar is an English drummer. I still feel like I'mlearning to play. If wed had a crystal ball back then, we woulda wrote twelve of those. It's fun while you're there, especially if you're building something you want to build-like a song that you will be performing on stage. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. I use traditional grip when I'm playing anything other than rock and roll, because rock and roll doesn't call for a lot of notes. After being on the road, I'd spend a couple of months studying with him once or twice a week. Everybody at the airport, man, walkin by, givin me the thumbs-up, like, Yo! It was self-indulgent music. I was taken to London by the Mojos. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. RM: How much musical freedom does Zappa give his band? What was the deal with that? So I thought, Well, maybe Im not supposed to be there.. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. But youre asking me how it felt. I had always sort of planned to go, but I wasnt sure I was gonna go, you know what I mean? It's easy to keep going at a high level of intensity for a four- minute solo, and just go through fast and end it. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. See, if you price yourself as an average session man," you get every Tom, Dick and Harry calling you up for sessions, and I'm not into doing just anybody's session. **, Well, noI didnt realize anything. The substitute would not know the charts, would not be able to solo or ad-lib or anything else. Goddammit, we were good together. AD: On. He is the major soloist in the band. Blues and progressive stuff was where I was at, yknow? I was the new kid in town. Like, Okay, we won the World Series. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was. All creative processes are a love-hate thing. I drank a lot. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. Every guy in the band would take about a 1O-chorus solo on each tune. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? If it wasnt for Herbie Herbert fighting for what he believed was the right direction, which was This guys gonna be the singer of the band, and I dont wanna talk about it anymorehe fought for me. He's with the Starship." It was a pretty heavy situation. You dont understand. _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. Its no different. Im layin down, too. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. AD: He's a drummer by nature. He'd just call out a song and tell me whether it was a shuffle or whatever, and give me a nod if there was a break. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. RM: Do you ever write out charts for yourself? Thats right. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked. The pair, along with Rod Stewart, were the backbone of the Jeff Beck Group from its formation in 1967 until just over two years later.In that time they developed a reputation as a force to be reckoned with, compared favorably with Led Zeppelin, as Wood discussed with Mojo in a recent interview. Now, I come offstage feeling great, happy, and everything else. Cause you know, they had a singer before me, named Robert Fleischmann. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. I would suggest that anybody who feels tired and worn out on stage, check out the nearest Nautilus center and go into a program.
